| Dear BHS Band Parents and Students: |
|
I
*Please see the thank you note below from
our Band Booster President about our Spring
Extravaganza.
The final week of the school year has arrived and it
gives me an opportunity to look back at all of the
great things that our band program has accomplished
this year. Such as:
1. 4 class championships by the BHS Marching Band -
while sweeping all other captions
2. SCBDA State Marching Championship Finalist
3. The BHS and RVHS Band Boosters hosted the largest
band competition in South Carolina.
4. 3 students attended the Winthrop Band Clinic - 2
of which made the Honor Band
5. 1 student selected for the Honor Band of America
- 1st chair
6. 12 students selected for the SCBDA Region 3
All-Region Band
7. 6 students selected for the SCBDA All-State Band
8. 7 students attended the USC Band Clinic - 5 of
which made the Honor Band
9. 1 student selected to the SCBDA All-State Jazz
Band
10. The creation of the "Panarchy Steel Band".
11. The creation of the Chamber Recital Concert
12. The BHS Symphonic Band receives straight
"Superior" ratings for the first time.
This has been an outstanding year and I am very
thankful for the opportunity to work with great
students and their families. I hope all of you
enjoy your summer break and I look forward to seeing
most of you when we return for band camp on July
26th.
To our senior students and parents: Thank you for
your dedication to our band program over the past
four years. You could have chosen a lot of other
activities/courses in which to be involved, but your
passion for music performance kept bringing you
back. As you leave BHS, please remember to stay in
touch. We definitely want to hear about the great
things you end up doing with your future.
Sincerely,
Glen Funderburk

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
THANK YOU: I
want to say a huge THANK YOU to
students, parents, and staff who helped with the
Spring Extravaganza today! We had lots of fun
and raised money for the band in the process.
Stay tuned for a count of just how much we
raised. Thank you to all who helped organize
this behind the scene – Mellanie Jinnette, Jo
Williams, Dave Davis, Roy Lasseter, Tracy Fry,
Lisa Krapohl, Kathy Morrison, and our favorite
grandmother – Mrs. Susan. A big thank you goes
out to Trinity United Methodist Church for
letting us “invade” the premises today. Another
huge thank you goes out to JB Bishop, Larry
Sharpe, and Sac Edge for lending us grills. An
even bigger thank you goes out to JB and Larry
for cooking the 80 (count ‘em 80) beautiful
Boston butts! Thank you also to the seniors who
showed up to help! That is true dedication to
the band.
Thank you to the executive board-elect: Mellanie Jinette, president; Roy Lasseter, vice-president; Jo Williams, treasurer; and Tracy Fry, secretary; as well as the committee chairs we already have in place: Deb Krotish, Ways and Means; Ali Sills, Hospitality; Mrs. Susan, Uniforms; Benji Morrison, Transportation; and Roxann Brasington, Chaperones. Thank you all so much for stepping up to take leadership roles for the Boosters!
I also want to say thank you to everyone for the beautiful plaque and for the kind words. It has been my pleasure to serve on the executive board of the Boosters for the past 3 years (1 as secretary and 2 as president). Dave also wanted to thank everyone for his 2 years as the “First Dude”. It’s an incredible amount of work, but also incredibly rewarding. We’ve accomplished so much for the kids in the 5 short years we’ve been around as a school and bands. Our new leadership is ready to take us to the next level and I look forward to working with everyone as TOB director for Brennan’s senior year.
My last thank you (for now) is for the kids and staff this year. I want to say again what Glen, Jon, and I have said several times this year – this is a truly great group of kids! I will miss this class of seniors, especially those that started with Brennan as 8th graders in the very first BHS band in 2005. These kids built the foundation for who the BHS bands are today! I can’t wait to see what that “cute little band from Blythewood” has in store for us next year!
We are already planning the Town of Blythewood Tournament of Bands 2010! Parents, please think about where you can contribute (no talent or skills required) and let me know where you would be willing to serve. This is your chance to VOLUNTEER before you get VOLUNTOLD.
Have a great summer and let’s make the 2010-11 band season even more memorable!
